The Hills, TX is a relatively young new jurisdiction. The Hills of Lakeway, now designated as The Hills (or Village of The Hills), was originally in the extra-territorial jurisdiction of the City of Austin. In 1996, a contract, that transferred the jurisdiction to the City of Lakeway, carried the stipulation that the City of Lakeway would consent to the incorporation election for a municipality within the village territory. Within a month, a resolution was signed consenting to the incorporation of The Hills. In February 1997, a plan for incorporation as a municipality was presented to property owners in The Hills of Lakeway and a vote was held with 97% of the community approving. The Hills was incorporated as a municipality in the State of Texas in May 1997.
